Smarttype puts screen in your keyboard so you can see and type while you type and see

Marrying a keyboard and an LCD is not exactly revolutionary any more. Art Lebedev has been doing it since at least 2008. But those devices have always been aimed at power users and gamers, not your average Joe. Smartype, from KeyView, doesn't display custom buttons for World of Warcraft of alter the fonts you see for languages that don't use the Latin alphabet. Instead, its primary purpose is to display exactly what you're typing. The screen along the top of the tiny deck allows users that aren't proficient touch typers to see what they're pecking out, without looking back and forth between the keyboard and their monitor. There are also a handful of apps that pop up notifications for email or display the current weather. The goal is to bring the interactive app revolution that has made our phones "smart" to the rather staid world of the keyboard. For now the Smartype is only available in Israel, but the company is working on international availability. For more, check out the video after the break.

[Thanks, Ilya]

Visualized Samsung's human, Galaxy Notepowered taxi

That's the last time we take a taxi in Berlin. After a fairly harrowing journey across the city to tonight's Samsung IFA event, we reached our destination and spotted a clearly superior mode of transportation: a fleet of pedal-powered cabs sporting Galaxy Note 10.1s in the back. Of course, we probably would have spent more time admiring the glory that is Berlin, rather than the 10-inch screen, but it's nice to have the option there when we need it.

Turkey to press for safe zone in Syria

ISTANBUL (AP) ? There is no better lesson about the perils of setting up a safe zone in a country in conflict than Srebrenica, where Bosnian Serbs killed some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in 1995 in what had been declared a U.N.-protected enclave. Now Turkey is pressing the United Nations to set up a safe haven inside Syria to protect thousands of people fleeing the country's civil war as it strains to shelter an increasing flow of refugees.

Mindful of that bloody episode in the Balkans ? Europe's worst massacre since World War II ? Turkey and its allies, particularly the United States, have conducted detailed planning and extensive diplomacy ahead of a possible occupation of some territory in Syria, where activists say more than 20,000 people have died since an uprising began in March 2011 ? many of them civilians killed by regime forces.

Yet the idea of a buffer zone, or no-fly zone ? or more likely a combination of the two ? still poses complex legal and logistical challenges, as well as fears that intervention could trigger reprisal attacks and end up widening the conflict in an already combustible region.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Wednesday that he would press the U.N. Security Council on Thursday at a high-level meeting in New York to set up the safe zone, reflecting frustration at the failure of rhetoric, diplomacy, economic pressure and aid for the Syrian opposition to stop the bloodshed. However, such action amounts to military intervention because a security force would have to guard civilians, and Russia, an ally of Syria that has a military base there, and China have used their council votes to block action against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"We expect the U.N. to step in and protect the refugees inside Syria, and if possible, to shelter them in camps there," Davutoglu said. "When refugee numbers reach hundreds of thousands, this problem goes beyond being an internal issue and becomes an international one. No one has the right to expect Turkey to take on this international responsibility on its own."

Turkey has long floated the idea of a buffer zone to protect displaced Syrians from attacks by Syrian regime forces, but the issue is more pressing because the number of refugees in Turkey has exceeded 80,000 ? an amount it says approaches its limits. The U.N. refugee agency has said up to 200,000 refugees could eventually flee to Turkey, which shares a 566-mile (911-kilometer) frontier with Syria. Tens of thousands of Syrians have also fled to Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan.

However, the humanitarian crisis is clouded by geopolitical interests and rivalries. Russia felt betrayed by the NATO military mission in Libya, where it believes a U.N. mandate to protect civilians from attacks by forces loyal to dictator Moammar Gadhafi was used as legal cover to unseat him.

If Russian cannot be persuaded, a group of allies, including the U.S., Turkey, France, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, could choose to proceed with a safe zone without the legitimacy of a U.N. resolution. But Assad, who still counts regional power Iran among his few supporters, could gain political capital by characterizing an intervention as a Western or sectarian vendetta against him.

With Syria known to be in possession of chemical weapons, and Israel pondering an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, allied planners must consider the worst-case scenarios of intervention ? an especially unappetizing prospect for the U.S. administration ahead of a presidential election in November. Turkey has said it will not act alone.

"Legally they need U.N. approval to create a buffer zone or no-fly-zone, but it doesn't seem possible in the near future because of Russia's opposition in the Security Council," said Ercument Tezcan, an international law expert at USAK, a research center based in Ankara, the Turkish capital. Still, he said, allies could establish a no-fly zone in Syria, just as U.S.-led powers did in Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War to protect Kurds and Shiite Muslims from dictator Saddam Hussein, and enforce it on the basis of humanitarian intervention even though they would be violating Syria's sovereignty.

"There is no legal definition of humanitarian intervention," Tezcan said. "It just needs strong willpower, but these countries may be criticized by their publics and by history."

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius of France, which backs Turkey's idea for buffer zones, said in an interview Wednesday on France-Inter radio that setting them up without an internationally imposed no-fly zone to protect civilians is impossible.

"We continue to believe despite all the limits that there are, that something can be done in international legality," he said, citing Russo-Chinese vetoes on tougher U.N. language against Syria. "We cannot just sit idly by."??????

Since the powers that would establish any safe zone are also calling for Assad's ouster and supporting the Syrian opposition, a so-called humanitarian mission could easily be construed as the first step in regime change managed from the outside. There would be concerns about whether Syrian rebels are using any foreign-protected camps to stage attacks on regime forces, which in turn could try to launch long-range artillery or air strikes on those same locations inside Syria.

The grave burden of protecting civilians was evident at Srebrenica, where thousands were slain in summary executions and their bodies plowed into mass graves. International courts have ruled the massacre amounted to genocide. Dutch troops stationed in the enclave as U.N. peacekeepers were undermanned and outgunned, and failed to intervene.

"To be effective, a safe zone requires a serious armed force that can defend it and serious logistics to supply it and that means a lot of military boots on the ground and serious commitment," said Emir Suljagic, a survivor of the Srebrenica massacre who had worked as an interpreter for U.N. forces based in the town. He advocated an allied bombing campaign in Syria along the lines of those in Libya and Kosovo on the basis that, "the only answer to such violence is equally extensive violence."

Bosnian Serbs also took peacekeeping soldiers hostage in an attempt to deter United Nations commanders from ordering NATO air strikes against Serb forces surrounding Bosnian safe zones. This hostage situation blocked any serious military action by the U.N.

In 1994, under a U.N. mandate, France established a humanitarian zone in Rwanda in response to the genocide there, but the project was plagued by accusations that perpetrators of the violence benefited from it.

Human Rights Watch has urged countries that have taken in Syrian refugees to keep their borders open despite the pressure of greater numbers, and said the international community should contribute aid. In Beirut, HRW representative Lama Fakih expressed concern that the establishment of any safe zone could leave fleeing civilians in a potentially more precarious situation against their will.

"Under international law, they have a right to be able to leave their country and seek asylum in another country," Fakih said.

Turkey has experience with a buffer zone, helping to set one up in 1991 to deal with hundreds of thousands of Kurdish refugees flooding to the border from Iraq during Saddam's war with a U.S.-led coalition. International aid groups assisted Kurds on the Iraqi side of the border. The numbers flooding across from Syria are not as great, but Turkey is building four new camps to accommodate new arrivals. One opened late Tuesday, allowing authorities to start letting in several thousand more displaced Syrians who were waiting on the Syrian side of the border.

"If the situation in Syria becomes graver, it is possible that we will experience a mass exodus," said Atilla Sandikli, an analyst at BILGESAM, a research center in Istanbul. "A buffer zone has become inevitable."

3 Active Mining and Energy Stocks to Watch | Resource Investing ...

Three Active Mining and Energy Stocks to WatchHere?s a look at three stocks ? one energy?and two mining ? that had some of last week?s highest trading volumes (or the most shares exchanged between buyers and sellers).

Oil?and?gas?producer?Raging River Exploration?(TSXV:RRX)?was the most actively-traded stock on the TSX Venture last Friday, with a volume of 2,252,419 and a small loss in stock price of 0.91 percent. It closed at C$2.18.

Last week, the five-month old Saskatchewan-based junior?reported?net earnings of $3.4 million on cash flow of $7.5 million. The company had netbacks of $48.11 per barrel of oil equivalent (boe) for the three months ending June 30.?It booked an average production of 1,711 boe/day (97 percent oil and liquids).

The company also announced that it upped its expectations for its 2012 fiscal year exit production to 2,300 boe/day, up from earlier estimates of 2,200 boe/day.

President and CEO Neil Roszell was?surprised?by the increased output, noting that initial productivity from the company?s Viking horizontal wells was stronger than expected. He believes the wells could continue to exceed initial projections.

New completion techniques and strategies that allowed the wells to produce at rates 50 to 70 percent higher than historical well productivity in the area were credited with producing the higher output.

These figures initially boosted the company?s stock price early last week as analysts had projected that production numbers and cash flow levels would be down as a result of lower oil prices and wet weather impacting production schedules.

Production at Viking was stimulated by an extraction method referred to as ?waterfloods,? which injects water to flush out residual oil in formations that are targeted by horizontal and vertical drilling rigs. Roszell acknowledged the impact that these hydraulic fracture stimulations have had for the company in recent months and will have leading forward.

GoldQuest Mining?(TSXV:GQC) was the second-most actively traded TSX Venture stock last week, gaining 8.92 percent to close at $1.71 after 1,973,443 trades were made.

Already doing well, the company continued to receive positive attention from the market after releasing strong assay results from its Romero property, located in the Dominican Republic, in late July.

Those assays added to other strong mineralization results released for the property earlier this summer, and indicate significant mineralization, including 258 meters grading 4.5 grams/tonne (g/t) gold and 1.3 percent copper as well as an upper section of 55 meters grading 1.25 g/t gold.

The company also announced that it will conduct further drilling of Romero once a larger drill rig can be brought in to assist the two currently in operation. The company hopes to build off of the mineralization at its nearby La Escandalosa property, which has a NI 43-101 inferred resource of 3.129 Mt at 3.14 g/t gold, or 316,000 ounces.

GoldQuest holds a 100 percent stake in eight Dominican properties and has been operating in the country since 2001. Its most advanced property to date is Las Animas, which holds an indicated 1 million tonnes of 2.64 g/t gold and is currently undergoing metallurgical testing.

The Dominican Republic is also home to one of the largest gold properties in the world, including the?25.3-million-ounce proven and probable Pueblo Viejo gold mine belonging to Barrick Gold (TSX:ABX,NYSE:ABX) and Goldcorp (TSX:G,NYSE:GG). It is set to?begin operations this year.

Finally, Aurcana (TSXV:AUN), a Canadian silver miner with operations in Texas and Mexico, was the fourth-most actively traded company at the end of week, with a volume of 1,882,107.

The company?s?Q2 report, which it released last week, fell in line with Wall Street analysts? projections, according to Thomson Reuters data. It posted a net income from mining operations of $3.4 million for the first six months of 2012. These figures represent a 50 percent increase from the same period in 2011 and were largely attributed to the expansion of the company?s Mexico-based La Negra silver mine.

The La Negra mine, an existing production site in operation between 1970 and 2000, witnessed a 32 percent increase in tonnes of ore processed during the second quarter of 2012 while producing 45 percent more silver ounces (373,037) during the same period.

The company also completed a second mill expansion at La Negra, boosting processing capacity to 2,500 tonnes per day. Drilling programs continue to delineate mineral bodies on Aurcana?s 99.9 percent-owned property.

Aurcana?s Texas-based Shafter project boasts a silver resource of 24.6 million measured and indicated?ounces and 22.8 million ounces inferred. The mine is expected to recover 3.9 million ounces of silver in its first year of production.

Shares in the company closed Friday at 93 cents, up 8.14 percent.

American Red Cross of Mississippi | Pet Safety and Shelter During a ...

Pet Safety and Shelter During a Disaster

As Isaac draws near, families are making sure everyone is safe?including their pets. Pets enrich the lives of individuals and families in more ways than can be counted.??In turn, they depend on their owners for their safety and well being. ?Just as households prepare to take care of family members; it?s important for people with pets or service animals to take steps ahead of time to keep them as safe as possible during a disaster or other emergency.? said Sandra Hodge, CEO, Mississippi Region. The?American Red Cross?offers the following tips to help people with pets and service animals prepare for a disaster:

  • Assemble a portable emergency preparedness kit for pets. Store items in a sturdy container that can be carried easily (plastic bin, duffle bag), and make sure to include:
  • Sturdy leashes, harnesses and/or carriers to transport pets and service animals safely and ensure they can?t escape.
  • Water, food, bowls, cat litter/pan and manual can opener.
  • Medications, medical records, first aid kit, and veterinarian?s contact information.
  • Current photos of pets in case they get lost.
  • Pet beds and toys, if space permits.
  • Research locations that could shelter pets in the event evacuations are called for.??American Red Cross disaster shelters cannot accept pets because of health and safety regulations. Service animals that assist people with disabilities are the?only?animals allowed in Red Cross shelters. It may be difficult to find shelter for animals in the midst of a disaster, so plan ahead.
  • Contact regional hotels and motels to check policies on accepting pets and restrictions on number, size, and species. Ask if ?no pet? policies could be waived in an emergency.
  • Ask friends, relatives, or others in neighboring areas whether they could shelter pets.
  • Ask local animal shelters or veterinarians if they provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets in a disaster. Animal shelters are caring for the animals they already have so this should be a last resort.
  • Keep a list of ?pet friendly? places that are located along evacuation routes, including phone numbers.
  • If told to evacuate, take your pets with you. If it is not safe for you to remain at home, it is not safe for your pets.
  • If an advanced warning is issued, call ahead to confirm emergency shelter arrangements for pets. Bring all pets inside in case of sudden evacuation orders.
  • Make sure each animals? vaccinations are up to date and that each is wearing a securely fastened collar with contact information. After evacuating, add the temporary shelter location on the back of the pet?s ID tag.?
  • Birds should be transported in a secure travel cage or carrier. During warm weather, carry a plant mister to mist the birds? feathers periodically. Do not put water inside the carrier during transport. Provide a few slices of fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content. Have photo identification and leg bands. If the carrier does not have a perch, line it with paper towels and change them frequently. Try to keep the carrier in a quiet area. Do not let the birds out of the case or carrier.
  • Small mammals (hamsters, gerbils, etc.) should be transported in secure carriers suitable for maintaining the animals while sheltered. Take bedding materials, food bowls, and water bottles.
  • Evacuations of large animals, such as horses or cattle, should be planned as early as possible. It may be difficult to maneuver large animal transport vehicles in evacuation traffic.

Asian shares mixed before Fed chief speech

Asian shares were mixed Tuesday as fears about the eurozone and a slowdown in China were offset by hopes the US central bank chief would this week outline steps to boost the world's biggest economy.

Trade was light after US stocks ended mixed on Monday and the London stock exchange was closed for a public holiday.

Tokyo fell 0.57 percent, or 52.10 points, to 9,033.29, weighed down by a strong yen and a bleak government report, which cut its view on the economy for the first time in 10 months amid slow exports and consumer spending.

Seoul edged down 0.08 percent, or 1.54 points, to 1,916.33, with shares in Samsung Electronics rebounding 1.27 percent following a plunge on Monday after a US court fined the firm $1.05 billion for breaching Apple's patents.

Sydney gained 0.36 percent, or 15.7 points, to 4,359.4, while Hong Kong was flat, edging up 0.07 percent, or 13.13 points, to 19,811.80.

Shanghai jumped 0.85 percent, or 17.44 points, to 2,073.15 as investors cheered a plan by blue-chip Baoshan Iron and Steel to buy back its shares, raising hopes of similar moves by other companies, dealers said.

Asian shares have been driven higher in August on hopes of fresh central bank stimulus but the euphoria has been tempered in recent sessions by fears expectations may not be met.

Investors were waiting to see what central bankers say about stimulus measures when they meet in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke set for a key address on Friday.

"People are waiting for Jackson Hole," Paul Chan at Invesco in Hong Kong, told Dow Jones Newswires. "If anything disappoints the market, we could have a pretty nasty pullback."

US stocks were subdued on Monday before the meeting, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.25 percent, the S&P 500 off 0.05 percent, while a surge in Apple shares on its Samsung victory gave the tech-rich Nasdaq a small gain.

Traders are also hoping for hints about the European Central Bank's plans for a new programme to buy bonds of struggling eurozone states, and signals China could move to arrest its slowing growth by easing monetary policy.

"Investors are staying sluggish and balancing global easing expectations and worries over an economic slowdown in Europe and China," Tomoichiro Kubota, senior market analyst at Matsui Securities in Japan, told Dow Jones.

They were also waiting for the outcome of a meeting later Tuesday between European Union president Herman Van Rompuy and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

"Any hints as to how close Spain is to formally requesting assistance from her EU partners will be important given this is a precondition for the ECB resuming secondary market bond buying," National Australia Bank said in a note.

The euro slipped in Asia Tuesday after a key German business sentiment indicator released the previous day fell to its lowest level since March 2010.

The Ifo measure dropped for the fourth month running as Europe's biggest economy showed signs of being affected more and more by the eurozone crisis.

On currency markets in Asian afternoon trade, the euro bought $1.2488 and 98.08 yen, down from $1.2535 and 98.41 yen in New York late Monday.

The dollar also edged lower to 78.53 yen from 78.74 yen.

Oil slipped, with New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in October, down one cent to $95.46 a barrel in volatile trade, and Brent North Sea crude for October delivery down three cents to $112.23.

Gold was at $1,661.90 at 1845 GMT compared to $1,670.90 on Monday.

Bamboo bikes hit the pavement in Ghana
by Portia Crowe

Africa - The Good News ???Translate This Article
27 August 2012

In Ghana, a country burgeoning with traffic congestion, increasing economic growth, and a stark urban-rural divide, making frames of bicycles out of bamboo could be the key to promoting sustainable development. It also makes stronger, longer-lasting bikes.

This is according to Bernice Dapaah, the executive director of Bamboo Bikes Initiative, which trains young Ghanaians to build, fix, and market bamboo-framed bicycles.

'We are into women, children, and youth's empowerment. And the project reduces carbon emissions and contributes to traffic decongestion, so using it is also a form of reducing climate change,' she said in an interview with IPS.

Bamboo Bikes works in partnership with Ibrahim Djan Nyampong, the owner of Africa Items Co Ltd in Accra, and the frames are sold abroad for 350 dollars each. They cost nearly 200 dollars to build, and Nyampong?also Bamboo Bikes' technical advisor?pays the young apprentices an additional 30 dollars per frame for their labour.

Nyampong described some of the technical advantages that bamboo frames hold over their carbon fibre or metal counterparts.

'It lasts longer than the metal frame,' he said. 'You know a bamboo bike doesn't break?it's very durable.'

He said a control test run in Germany proved bamboo frames to be 10 times lighter than metal frames, and noted their heavy load-bearing capacity. Indeed bamboo's tensile strength?meaning the maximum stress it can withstand while being stretched?is much higher than that of steel.

Bamboo is fibrous, and therefore shock-absorbent. It naturally dampens vibrations, so the frames do not require steel or titanium springs.

'The bamboo has also been treated against splitting and termites, so it's very strong,' Nyampong explained.

He said the bamboo is treated for three to six months before being used for production. It is then coated in a clear lacquer to protect it against rain and other damage.

These elements have enhanced the frames' international marketability, and BambooRide, an Austrian company, has begun importing them for sale in Europe.

'At first, we were developing the frames together with (Nyampong), because they were good, but they had to fit a certain European standard,' said Matthias Schmidt, BambooRide's sales manager.

'So it was like a partnership, a knowledge transfer in both directions,' he told IPS.

The Austrian importers also provided Nyampong's team with new equipment, including their first jig, to improve precision and reduce the margin of error.

Now, the Austrian company imports up to 10 frames per month, and Schmidt said he looks forward to the initiative's continued expansion.

'Their capacity is limited... and in the case that we need more frames... we'll need other sources. So we're supporting Dapaah's efforts to improve the equipment and technology,' he said.

Ensuring Environmental Sustainability

Using bamboo rather than metal to build bicycle frames also holds several advantages for producers?and for the environment.

According to Dapaah, bamboo's availability as a local material not only enables producers to avoid expensive import costs, but also eliminates the carbon emissions that would arise from the transport of imported materials into the country.

Bamboo is also organic and recyclable, and, unlike metal materials, does not require high levels of energy during extraction and manufacturing.

'The bamboo bicycle is environmentally friendly... because we are also fighting against climate change,' explained Dapaah.

She said the initiative also commits to ecological sustainability by working with bamboo farmers in rural communities to harvest new bamboo crops, and conserve already existent ones.

'If we cut one bamboo, we make sure to plant at least three or five more,' she said.

In addition, bamboo bicycle frames promote sustainable transportation as an alternative to motor vehicles and fossil fuels.

According to Isaac Osei, the regional director for Ghana's Environmental Protection Agency, this is important.

'The traffic situation in the country in general is increasing, and when traffic increases it has its associated environmental issues,' he told IPS.

There are 30 motor vehicles for every 1,000 people in Ghana, and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority registers hundreds more each day. Data suggests that vehicle ownership will continue to rise, as the country hits record levels of GDP growth per capita. Ghana has the largest GDP per capita in West Africa at 402.3 dollars in 2011.

Osei noted some of the harmful impacts of increased vehicle use, including carbon dioxide emissions and pollution from dust particles on dirt roads.

'To actually educate people to use bicycles rather than vehicles, I think it is good for the country and the world as a whole,' he said.

By employing and providing young people with technical skills, the initiative is designed to reduce unemployment and, consequently, rural poverty.

'So far I've trained about 10 boys,' Nyampong said. 'They can build the bikes, but it's not up to the quality control level, so we are still training them.'

In addition, Bamboo Bikes will help graduated trainees establish their own workshops, and begin to train more young people.

In 2009, Bamboo Bikes won the Clinton Global Initiative Award, and in 2010, the United Nations Environment Programme Seed Initiative award. It also garnered international attention in June when it received a World Business and Development Award at the 2012 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

(AP) ? The few hundred protesters gathered under wet skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump even heavier rains on Tampa won't stop them from trying to get out their message that America's middle class is in trouble and needs to be restored.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" were melting on a warm, sticky, rainy day. Occupy protesters it represents the melting away of the middle class.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies, owned by Bain Capital, in the city of some 25,000 people. They say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy protesters are often made up of younger people who generally believe the financial system is stacked against the majority. But in Tampa, many older people joined the marchers.

They included Gaurapp and Landecker, who said that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

For months, protesters were gearing up for scores of people to converge on Tampa the day before the convention began to showcase their laundry list of beefs and key messages. The groups included organized labor and Occupy Wall Street.

Neither protesters nor the GOP, however, could foresee Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with winds, rain and maybe some flooding on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

The protests stayed small by mid-afternoon. And not all had the same message.

Some came to oppose just Mitt Romney, who officially will become the Republican nominee for president on Thursday. Others didn't seem to care for Romney nor President Barack Obama. And though jobs and wealth were strong messages, others had different agendas.

About 30 people, many with dogs, held a rally against Romney, who infamously strapped his dog in a crate to the top of his car on a family vacation years ago.

"If somebody is going to treat their animal inhumanely, how are they going to treat our country?" said Kim Swygert, 37, a law student from Tampa, who came with her Great Dane.

"He strapped his dog to the top of the car because he crapped, excuse my French," she said.

Several carried anti-Romney signs including one that read, "Don't roof rack me, bro."

The weather didn't deter 52 year-old Donald Butner. He says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

Many protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America.

The 54-year-old Landecker spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

why has she dumped me :(? | Relationships

Question by webbster: why has she dumped me :( ?
i was with my gf for nearly 3 months, we were in a long distance relationship but we spoke and met up as often as we possibly could

and 2 days ago we was fine and happy and joking around and had no problems in the world, and then yesterday she wouldnt answer her fone so i went on msn and first thing she said was??im sorry? and i was like ?for what?? and she said ?its not gonna work, i cant be in a long distance relationship? and i asked why is it that you randomly decided this after nearly a month and she just said she been thinking about it for a while and couldnt be in a long distance relationship, which is odd because we had a meet up date for sunday that she was so excited about :(

and then we got abit worked up over the fone and she said ?ok you wanna know why i dumped you? i dumped you because im going out tomorow night and i have a feeling im gonna cheat on you and i thought its better i end it before anything happens? and i went mad at her saying what a selfish bitchy comment that was and she then changed her story back to ?i dont wanna be in a long distance relationship? and never mentioned the cheating comment agn since

i have tried hard not to lose her, i called her telling her i love her and asked her if she loved me last night and she told me she still loves me before bursting into tears and i told her we can fix it then and she told me we couldnt she dont want a long distance, and i kept trying to convice her but it seemed like she had made her mind up and nothing was gonna change it

i have tried to call her and text her all day and she hasnt replyed and i begged her to answer saying it was hurting so much, but she just switched her fone off

how can we go from happy 2 days ago, to her wanting to get rid of me next day :( , i cant help but think someone might of got her to dump me, becuase as soon as she dumped me she didnt wanna hear my voice at all like it was gonna change her mind

i have questioned how she could love me but be doing this? and why she dont mind me feeling crap while she just switches her fone off

whats going on? i think i offically lost her but i dont know why :(

i always knew she hated the distance as much as i did, but 2 days ago she was telling me how great it will be sunday and yesterday she was trying her hardest to say goodbye to me :( , like i had to **** off as fast as possible

yes long distance relationships are hard work but if both partners are willing to do it, it CAN work. no offence, but if your girlfriend called you and said she wants to break up because she may cheat on you the next night at a party, thats not the type of girlfriend you want.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

I recommend these long distance relationships love products

Breast Cancer Survivors Walk The 3-Day To Inspire, Support - WCCO

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) - A sea of pink tents helped brighten up the gray skies in Maplewood. This tent city is part of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, an event designed to raise money for breast cancer research.

Dr. Sheri Phillips, the National Spokesperson Susan G Komen 3-Day, says over a thousand participants are expected.

?We had 14 hundred wonderful participants show up on Friday morning ready to walk an average of 20 miles a day for three consecutive days all to put an end to breast cancer,? Phillips said.

Dr. Sheri Philips herself is a breast cancer survivor. She says the stories behind why people walk are inspirational.

Most of those stories are born from the writings and pictures left behind in the Remembrance Tent.

Helen Stripe is a medical crew captain and a three-time breast cancer survivor.

?I?m the product of research this is the Susan Komen 3-Day and all the money that we raised affects me, and what happens to me,? Stripe said.

She has been cancer free for several years, and a part of the 3-Day for more than 9 years. Stripe feels helping others is her way of paying back the people who are walking for her and others who battle against breast cancer.

?It?s a service we offer that keeps our walkers walking. The main goal is to try to get everybody to finish the three day,? she said.

Stripe feels every walker is here for her, as well as their loved ones. So she feels giving back is her way of staying in step with the hope of finding a cure.

The 3-Day will end Sunday at the State Fairgrounds.

Last year the walkers raised more than $82 million nationwide.

Atheism on the rise around the globe

According to a new poll, religiosity worldwide is declining while more people say they are atheists. In the United States, a growing number consider themselves non-believers.

Atheism is on the rise in the United States and elsewhere while religiosity is declining, according to a new worldwide poll. ?The Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism,? conducted by WIN-Gallup International headquartered in Switzerland, found that the number of Americans who say they are ?religious? dropped from 73 percent in 2005 ? when the poll was last conducted ? to 60 percent. Those who said they were ?convinced? atheists rose from 1 to 5 percent. And 33 percent of the people polled said that they don?t consider themselves as a ?religious person."

Nonbelievers

Ryan Cragun, a University of Tampa sociologist of religion, told the ?Religion News Services? he questions whether the number of atheists in the United States really grew as the poll suggested. Dr. Cragun suggests that people may just be more comfortable identifying themselves as atheist.

That view seems consistent with a study conducted by the Pew Research Center?s Forum on Religion & Public Life in 2009 showing that 5 percent of Americans at that time said they did not believe in God or a universal spirit, but only 24 percent of the nonbelievers actually called themselves atheists.

The new poll is based on interviews (face-to-face, by telephone or online varying from country to country) with more than 50,000 people from 57 countries. The participants were asked this question: ?Irrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person, or a convinced atheist??

America remains way down the list of countries for self-reported atheism. China tops that list with 47 percent ?convinced atheists,? followed by Japan (31 percent), the Czech Republic (30 percent), France (29 percent), and South Korea (15 percent).

Religious Ghana

According to the poll, the following are the top ten religious countries: Ghana (96 percent of the participants that they are religious), Nigeria (93 percent), Armenia (92 percent), Fiji (92 percent), Macedonia (90 percent), Romania (89 percent), Iraq (88 percent), Kenya (88 percent), Peru (86 percent), and Brazil (85 percent).

The least religious nations, according to the poll, are China (14 percent saying they are religious), Japan (16 percent), Czech Republic (20 percent), Turkey (23 percent), Sweden (29 percent), Vietnam (30 percent), Australia (37 percent), France (37 percent), Hong Kong (38 percent) and Austria (42 percent).

UCI asks USADA to explain case against Armstrong

(AP Photo/Christophe Ena, File)

(AP) ? The International Cycling Union will wait for the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to explain why Lance Armstrong should lose his seven Tour de France titles before commenting on the case.

The sport's governing body said Friday it expects USADA to submit documents "to the parties concerned," as the case threatens to wipe a cycling icon almost out of the record books.

"The UCI recognizes that USADA is reported as saying that it will strip Mr. Armstrong of all results from 1998 onwards in addition to imposing a lifetime ban from participating in any sport which recognizes the World Anti-Doping Code," the Switzerland-based organization said in a statement.

"As USADA has claimed jurisdiction in the case the UCI expects that it will issue a reasoned decision" explaining the action taken, the UCI said, adding that legal procedures obliged USADA to fulfill this demand in cases "where no hearing occurs."

Armstrong has chosen not to pursue an arbitration hearing where he could have fought charges brought by U.S. anti-doping officials that his teams doped when he won the Tour from 1999-2005.

The UCI and USADA have engaged in a turf war over who should prosecute allegations against Armstrong.

Armstrong disputes that USADA has power to re-write cycling results, and uncertainty remains over what role the ASO sports promotion company which organizes the Tour de France will have in the process.

Armstrong insisted his decision to decline arbitration was not an admission of guilt, but a refusal to enter a process he believes is unfair.

"Lance has never withdrawn from a fair fight in his life so his decision today underlines what an unjust process this has been," Johan Bruyneel, Armstrong's longtime coach, wrote on his personal website on Friday.

Still, USADA chief executive Travis Tygart said the UCI was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it" as a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

USADA maintains that Armstrong used banned substances as far back as 1996, including the blood-booster EPO and steroids, as well as blood transfusions.

The agency also claims to have blood tests from 2009 and 2010 which were "fully consistent" with doping, at a time when Armstrong was monitored by the biological passport program run by the UCI.

USADA wants to annul all Armstrong's race results from August 1998. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the road time trial.

The International Olympic Committee said Friday it will await decisions by the U.S. agency and UCI before taking any steps against the rider.

Even if Armstrong loses the legal battle, the UCI would still be able to regard him as its 1993 world champion in the men's road race in Oslo, Norway.
