The embattled?YRC Worldwide Inc. recently named Kansas City attorney Michelle Russell as general counsel, executive vice president, and secretary.
Before joining YRC in 1997, Russell served for three years as general counsel to Spirit AeroSystems Holdings, Inc.? She joined YRC as a real estate specialist handling sales and the purchase of terminals.? Most recently, Russell served as YRC?s assistant general counsel.
She earned her J.D. form the University of Kansas School of Law.
Russell worked as an associate attorney for Kansas City?s Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, where she focused primarily on real estate law and transactional issues.
YRC?s law department will likely keep Russell busy.
According to Law.com: Russell found her legal calling by happenstance. ?I was actually going to be a meteorologist,? says Russell, who has bachelor?s degrees in atmospheric science and anthropology. As an undergraduate student, she often passed by the law school on her way to broadcast a local daily weather forecast. Russell decided on a whim to take the law school admissions test, and she aced it.
By changing the culture of the law department, Russell hopes to pave the way for YRC to regain its position as a premier shipping provider. ?Like it was before,? she says, ?but better.? The new GC envisions an ambitious mandate for herself: developing a law department that can support a successful business. YRC should find the road smoother ahead.
YRC completed a four-year restructuring last summer. During that process, the law department was heavily engaged in a bankruptcy avoidance effort. Instead of what Russell calls ?meat and potatoes? legal work, its lawyers were tasked with handling credit agreements and responding to requests from bankers, advisers, and consultants.
