Matt Sharp is taking over as president of Alabama Media Group, which includes AL.com and The Birmingham News.
Alabama Media Group, which includes The Birmingham News and AL.com, today announced the hiring of a new president, Matt Sharp.
Sharp, 38, will relocate by the start of the school year to Alabama from Michigan, where he was senior vice president of sales and marketing for MLive Media Group.
He fills the position formerly occupied by Cindy Martin, who left in June to take a job as senior vice president of business development at Advance Digital.
Sharp is coming on board at AMG during a tumultuous time for the news organization, which recently laid off 300 employees across the state as it reduced its daily newspapers' publication schedules to three days weekly.
Both MLive and AMG are owned by Advance Local, a division of Advance Publications. Full disclosure: The Birmingham Business Journal's parent company, American City Business Journals, is also owned by Advance.
