Recent medical advances have increased the number of cancer survivors. Following successful treatment and return to a normal life, a number of cancer survivors in their reproductive years desire to start - or complete - their family. Unfortunately, however, the cancer treatment can impact their therapy.

A new study by Swedish researchers has found that more men than women are counseled regarding fertility preservation before embarking on a treatment regimen. Researchers at the Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden) and the Uppsala University (Uppsala, Sweden) published their findings online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The goal of the study was to investigate the perception of fertility-related information and use of fertility preservation in male and female cancer survivors who were of reproductive age. The authors reviewed data from population-based registers in Sweden and identified cancer survivors diagnosed from 2003 to 2007. Included in the study were cancer survivors who were age 18 to 45 years at diagnosis and had lymphoma, acute leukemia, testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, or female breast cancer that was treated with chemotherapy. A questionnaire was mailed to 810 eligible participants; 484 cancer survivors (60%) returned the questionnaire.

The researchers found that the majority of male participants reported having received information about the impact of cancer treatment on fertility (80%) and fertility preservation (68%); more than half of the men banked frozen sperm (54%). The women were less informed. Less than half (48%) reported that they received information about treatment impact on fertility and 14% reported that they received information about fertility preservation. Only seven women (2%) underwent fertility preservation. Predictors for receiving information about treatment impact on fertility were a pretreatment desire to have children, male gender, and being age 35 years or less at diagnosis. Predictors for receiving information about fertility preservation included male gender, age 35 years or less at diagnosis, and having no children at diagnosis.

The authors concluded that a marked gender difference was found in regard to the receipt of fertility-related information and use of fertility preservation. They stressed that an urgent need existed for the dissemination of fertility-related information to female cancer victims. This would allow them to participate in informed decisions regarding their treatment and future reproductive ability.

The researchers looked at the medical records of the individuals to calculate how many had been prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen over an eight-year period.

Many were taking them for heart conditions or arthritis.

Those who were more frequently prescribed NSAIDs were less likely to have skin cancer.

The higher the dose and the longer a person had been on the medication, the greater the protective effect.

Individuals with more than two prescriptions for NSAIDs had a 15% decreased risk for developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 13% lower risk of malignant melanoma.

NSAIDs did not appear to lower the overall risk of basal cell carcinoma ? the most common and least aggressive type of skin cancer. But they did cut the risk of basal cell carcinomas developing on certain parts of the body other than the head and neck.

Limitations

The researchers from the University Hospital in Denmark say more research is needed to confirm and further explain their findings.

Studies in animals suggest NSAIDs may block the growth of early pre-cancerous skin lesions, but it is not yet clear if this is also the case in humans.

Scientists already suspect that these drugs may protect against many other cancers, including bowel cancer.

The researchers point out that although they found a link with prescriptions they were not able to monitor precisely how much of the drug a person actually took. Also, people can buy drugs like aspirin from a pharmacy without a prescription.

And they did not look at sun exposure ? the root cause of skin cancer.

Experts say even if NSAIDs do offer some protection against skin cancer, people still need to be sensible in the sun.

Hazel Nunn of Cancer Research UK said: ?By far and away the best way to reduce the risk of skin cancer is to enjoy the sun safely, and take care to avoid sunburn.

?Sunburn?s a clear sign that your skin?s been damaged, and this damage can build up over time and lead to skin cancer in the future. When the sun?s strong, use a combination of shade, clothes and at least SPF 15 sunscreen to protect your skin.

?There is mounting evidence that aspirin does reduce the risk of some cancers, but it?s too soon to say if this includes skin cancer. Aspirin can have serious side effects ? so it?s important to talk to a doctor about the risks and benefits if you?re thinking of taking it regularly.?

Following a three-day weekend (U.S. markets are closed Monday for Memorial Day), uncertainty will continue to swirl over Europe, with the threat of Greece leaving the eurozone still looming.

Worries over Greece's future and the broader region's debt problems have already triggered deep losses in U.S. stocks and international markets this month. The S&P 500 (SPX) and Dow (INDU) are down almost 6% in May, and headed for their worst monthly losses since November 2011. In fact, the Dow has only been up four days so far this month. The only other time the Dow had a month with just four advancing days was September 1903.

Meanwhile, the Nasdaq (COMP) has tumbled almost 7% and is on track for its worst monthly performance in two years.

U.S. markets will continue to be driven by the situation in Europe, especially in the weeks leading up to Greece's June 17 elections, said Tom Schrader, managing director at Stifel Nicolaus. Until that date, investors will keep close tabs on polling results and comments from European leaders.

If Greece ends up with a coalition government led by the leftist Syriza party, which is currently leading the polls, chances are good that Greece will be forced to exit the eurozone.

Syriza party leader Alexis Tsipras has denounced the country's austerity measures that are a condition of Greece's bailout deal. While EU leaders say they want Greece to remain in the eurozone, they also stress that the nation must abide by the terms of its bailout agreement.

The growing risk of a Greek exit also raises concerns about the ramifications for Italy and Spain, said Schrader. Spanish banks are already in the spotlight, with Spain's fourth-largest bank, Bankia, asking the nation's central bank for ?19 billion to recapitalize itself.

Later in the week, focus will shift to the U.S. economy, as investors parse through a deluge of economic data, including four different readings on the job market, as well as a reading on manufacturing activity and auto sales figures.

The most important number will come in the Labor Department's May jobs report before the opening bell on Friday.

Economists are forecasting that 155,000 jobs were added in May. While that would be an improvement over the measly 115,000 jobs added in April and the 154,000 in March, the pace is still weak compared to job gains in the previous three months, each of which exceeded 200,000. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 8.1%.

"If the jobs number doesn't come in above expectations, that will raise some red flags," said Schrader. A lack of more robust jobs growth could push the country into a somewhat mild recession, he added.

Schrader will be keeping a close eye on oil prices, as the energy market telegraphs how the broader economy is doing, he said.

Crude oil prices have tumbled more than 13% during the last month, trading around $91 a barrel. Last week, oil prices dipped below $90 a barrel for the first time since November.

"A lot of people like when oil and gas prices fall, but that's a negative for the economy, so you have to be careful what you wish for," said Schrader.?

Memorial Day grief for military suicide families

For the family and friends of service members who died by suicide, Memorial Day can be not only a solemn day, but also a painful reminder that military suicides are not treated the same as combat deaths.?

Kim Ruocco, the national director of suicide education and outreach at Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS, has experienced this isolating grief firsthand. This weekend, she is bringing together about 100 suicide survivors at TAPS' annual Memorial Day weekend National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for Young Survivors.

"[Suicide survivors] are surrounded by people whose loved ones were killed in action," Ruocco said. "There's a real sense that their loved one's death was not an honorable death."

Ruocco's husband, Marine Corps Maj. John Ruocco, killed himself seven years ago. He?was a Cobra helicopter pilot who ran 75 combat missions during a five-month deployment in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004. He had struggled with depression in the past, particularly after a training accident in the 1990s when two Cobras collided in midair, and he lost four friends.

In February 2005, while living temporarily in a hotel room near Camp Pendleton in California, awaiting a redeployment to Iraq and considering mental health counseling, John Ruocco hanged himself.?

"He was so ashamed of being depressed and not being able to do his job," Kim Ruocco, 49, said. He was going to seek treatment, but she believes that "when he?sat there and thought about what it meant to get help, how people would see you, how young Marines viewed him, how his peers viewed him ... he thought the problem was him."

Kim Ruocco, who has a master's degree in social work, provides counseling resources to suicide survivors, helps family members secure benefits and facilitates support groups. TAPS also tries to change procedures and policies that can be hurtful to suicide survivors, such as the exclusion of service members who died by suicide from state memorials and?the distribution to suicide survivors of different Gold Star pins than the ones given to families when a service member dies in action.

This weekend's?four-day event for survivors is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants. It?will feature panels and peer support groups on dealing with grief,?sessions on spirituality and meditation,?and events for children.

In 2011, 301 active-duty service members died by suicide, according to the Department of Defense. More than half of those deaths occurred in the Army, where the suicide rate last year was projected at 24.1 per 100,000, outpacing the national rate adjusted for the comparison of 18.6 people per 100,000.?A study released earlier this year by the U.S. Army Public Health Command found that the number of active-duty soldiers who committed suicide increased 80 percent between 2004 and 2008.

Though the Department of Defense has worked to de-stigmatize mental illness in recent years through various initiatives and training programs, challenges remain. On Thursday, Maj. Gen. Dana J.H. Pittard, commanding general of Fort Bliss in Texas, retracted a blog piece he posted on Jan. 19 in which he called suicide "an absolutely selfish act."?

"I am personally fed up with soldiers who are choosing to take their own lives so that others can clean up their mess," he wrote.?

Dennis R. Swanson, a public affairs officer at Fort Bliss, told msnbc.com that the post was written in an emotional moment after Pittard had attended two memorial services for soldiers who killed themselves, and then learned of a third suicide. In the 2012 fiscal year, there have been six suicides at Fort Bliss.?

In his retraction,?Pittard apologized for his "hurtful statement," which he said was "not in line with?the Army's guidance regarding sensitivity to suicide."?

"We must continue to do better each and every day, reaching out, encouraging?and helping those in need," he wrote.?

Ruocco worries that Pittard's original comments, which were removed from his blog, may have done damage. "By saying those words, he is telling the troops and their families that thinking about suicide is a weakness, it's not a mental illness," she said.?

Culture of stoicism
Leslie?McCaddon, 36, knows this conflict well. Her husband, Army Capt. Michael?McCaddon, a doctor,?killed himself in March. McCaddon, who served on a bomb squad on a deployment to Bosnia in the 1990s and was a first responder at the Oklahoma City bombing, battled severe depression for seven years and had a family history of suicide.

McCaddon said she urged him to seek help and he sporadically attended counseling sessions. But Michael, 37, was in his residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, and the demanding schedule made it difficult to seek intense treatment, she said. Michael also did not want to let his colleagues down or become a liability, McCaddon said.?

"Personally, I have visions where mental health counseling is as standard and routine and mandatory as physical training," said McCaddon, who will attend the TAPS gathering for the first time with her three children this weekend. "All the men and women can grumble and say that?s a waste of time, but they?d still go because it?d be their place of duty. Someone like Mike, if he?d been told he had to be there, he would have gone."

McCaddon believes that the military culture of stoicism, and the stigmatization of mental illness, kept her husband from seeking help for fear of ruining his career.?Many service members worry that they'll be passed over for promotions or even discharged after admitting and receiving treatment for a mental illness, Ruocco said.

'Somebody's got to talk to people'
It is the same fear that Bob Bagosy says keeps friends and colleagues of struggling service members from admitting how severe mental health issues can be. His son, Tommy, was considering in-patient mental health treatment in 2010, but repeatedly heard from fellow service members that it might hurt his career. Tommy, a 25-year-old Marine sergeant, had completed a tour in Fallujah, Iraq, from 2006 to 2007, and a second tour in Afghanistan in 2009. He sustained a traumatic brain injury during his deployment and had post-traumatic stress disorder.

When he threatened suicide to his wife, Katie, she asked Tommy's psychologist at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina to mandate in-patient treatment. Tommy was brought in to make those arrangements, but then walked out of the office, and after an encounter with the military police, shot himself to death.

Military women and suicide: Home safe but not sound

Bagosy believes that Tommy's life might have been saved had there been more candid discussion about struggles like his. "Somebody's got to talk to people," Bagosy said. "They've got to hear that just because you?re a Marine, and you survived the wars, does not mean you're not subject to having these thoughts."

Bagosy, a former Marine reservist, does his part by telling Tommy's story to groups of Marines, urging them to seek help if they need it.

He has been involved with TAPS' suicide survivor program since 2010 and will attend the gathering this weekend. "This group of people became my other family, my surrogate family. It?s an automatic bonding," he said.

Providing that support is the core of Ruocco's work, and her focus is helping survivors change their perspective on the tragedy they experienced. Their loved ones served and sacrificed, sustaining psychological and sometimes physical wounds, Ruocco tells survivors -- they just died differently.

"How they died defines it instead of how they lived," Ruocco said. "I try to get them to shift to how they lived."

YESTERDAYS latest album is a little different from the debut in that the vocals are now all in Hungarian and as others have mentioned this record is even more sugary(happy) than the debut. For me this is a step down from the debut and i wasn't exactly thrilled with that one either.

"Jatek" is uptempo with a beat and synths standing out. Vocals join in as well. Not a fan. "Forog A Tanc" is another energetic track although the tempo does shift back and forth. Some clapping and sampled mellotron too. The guitar is prominant late to end it. "Ejszaka" is the first of a three part suite called "Namafilm Szvit". This is mellow to start as reserved vocals join in. Tasteful guitar and synths replace the vocals as the beat continues. Vocals return after 4 1/2 minutes and the flute comes in late. "Nemafilm" is the second part and almost 10 minutes long. It's mid-paced with vocals but it does pick up as contrasts continue. Guitar and mellotron 3 minutes in. Flute and mellotron 6 1/2 minutes in as it continues to play out with vocals coming and going. "Melyrepules" ends the suite with vocals, guitar and a beat leading the way. Not a fan.

"Tukor" has strummed guitar, flute and a beat as the vocals join in. Yikes ! Not good at all. "Babu" starts out with guitar, synths and a beat as vocals and flute join in. "Flautoccata" is a short piece with flute throughout. "Megpihensz" opens with acoustic guitar as a beat and reserved vocals join in. Piano too. "Preludium Egy Esohoz" is my favourite because we get no vocals and lots of atmosphere with guest trumpet. It sounds nothing like the others. "Zapor" ends it as we get contrasts between the mellow and fuller sections and there is a hidden track as well.

Considering the debut was a low 3 stars for me, i have to give it the fans only rating. Just not the kind of music i enjoy at all.

OECD Report Confirms What Canada Has Been Saying: Trade Leads to Jobs, Growth and Long-Term Prosperity

Trade is the new stimulus, and prosperity is built on partnership, says International Trade Minister Ed Fast

May 23, 2012 - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, in France to attend the annual Organisation for Economic Co-operation (OECD) ministerial meeting, as well as an informal gathering of World Trade Organization ministers, today welcomed the findings of a new publication released by the OECD confirming the critical role trade plays in creating jobs, growth and prosperity. Minister Fast and his counterparts at the two meetings are discussing ways to deepen and improve global trade and investment ties.

?Our government understands the importance of trade to our economy,? said Minister Fast. ?Trade accounts for one out of every five jobs in Canada and for 63 percent of our country?s annual GDP. ?We welcome the OECD report, which confirms that protectionism is poisonous to global recovery efforts and that trade is the best way to create jobs and economic growth for people around the world.?

The analysis in the OECD publication strengthens the argument that trade contributes to job creation, economic growth, enhanced productivity and improved working conditions, as well as increased wages in developing countries.

?The benefits trade generates for Canadian families are clear,? said Minister Fast.? ?When we trade, we become more competitive. Prices for goods and services go down. Wages, salaries and our standard of living go up, and businesses are able to hire more workers.

?In addition to lower prices and a higher standard of living, trade also benefits families by providing more choice and selection of reasonably priced goods and services.?

While in Paris, Minister Fast is also conducting a number of bilateral meetings with his OECD and WTO counterparts on trade and investment-related issues, including a way forward on the Doha Round.

In less than six years, Canada has concluded new free trade agreements with nine countries: Colombia, Honduras, Jordan, Panama, Peru and the European Free Trade Association members Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Trade negotiations are ongoing with some of the largest, most dynamic and fastest-growing economies and regions around the world, including the European Union and India. Canada has also recently launched negotiations with Japan.

Assessing wildland fuels and hazard mitigation treatments in the southeast

ASHEVILLE, NC -- Research by USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station biometrician Bernie Parresol takes center stage in a special issue of the journal Forest Ecology and Management due out in June. Parresol is lead author of two of the five articlesand co-author of two morein an issue that focuses on methods that incorporate fine-scale data into the tools Southeastern forest managers use to assess wildfire potential and plan mitigation treatments.

Most fire behavior analyses rely on sparse plot inventories and data from satellites, and often do not address the complexity found at the ground level where managers operate. Parresol and fellow researchers demonstrated a statistical approach that can incorporate hundreds to thousands of fuel observations into models that managers can easily use to prioritize areas to treat to reduce the wildfire hazard.

Fire is an important part of forest ecosystems in the southeastern United States, especially in the Coastal Plain. European settlers cleared most of the native longleaf pine forests of the region; industry later planted many of the same acres in loblolly pine plantations. Meanwhile, fire suppression policies broke the cycle of frequent low-intensity fires in the remaining natural forests, causing the buildup of fuels that leads to wildfires.

Over the last decades, southeastern land managers added prescribed fire to other forest treatments to reduce wildland fires, promote forest restoration, and improve wildlife habitat. Because of budget constraints and public concerns about fire and smoke, managers need to prioritize the areas where they will use prescribed fire. To do this, they use wildfire hazard assessments such as LANDFIRE and the Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment (SWRA), both of which use satellite images and other supporting data to represent fuels across a landscape. Although these tools work well enough at the state and regional levels, they don't offer enough detail to land managers trying to decide which of their hundreds or thousands of acres should be burned first.

The special issue of Forest Ecology and Management focuses on a study conducted on the 200,000-acre Savannah River Site as representative of an actively managed forest landscape in the Southeast. Researchers used studies on the site to assess wildland fuels, potential fire behavior and treatments to reduce fire hazard. In his first article, Parresol and fellow researchers develop equations to describe fuel loads for both dead and alive materials on the site based on vegetation type, stand age, recent fire history and other aspects. These equations were then used to create custom landscape models based on the actual data from the site, then compared with results from LANDFIRE and SWRA to assess the effectiveness of those tools.

"Taken together, the research reported in these articles shows that fine scale measurements repeated over time can be put into a manageable framework and reduced to create dynamic fire behavior models useful to managers," says Parresol. "They can also be used to help address scientific questions and to evaluate the effect of management conditions."
